REVIEW – Animal Numbers Activity Center

Last week I got an update from Educational Insights about their Daily Deal and instantly shared it with my fans on Facebook and Twitter. It was a one day sale on their Animal Numbers Activity Center which normally retails for $40 but was being sold for $13.99.  The picture had me intrigued and although I was “technically” done with all my resource and material shopping I bit the bait and purchased one.  It was too cute to pass by and I figured I could easily use it with both Stella and Lyra.

It arrived just in time for our first week of school so I hid it away until I could unveil it ceremoniously for the girls.  My girls LOVE animals and I was correct in assuming they’d adore this.

We opened it together and I was immediately pleased and felt justified with my purchase.   This thing is durable!  The felt material is thick and the little animals are really solidly-made- nothing cheap or flimsy about it.  I bet this would even last long in a typical classroom setting.

The hardest part is going to be keeping track of the small Velcro-backed animals because my children immediately wanted to adopt them and asked if they could sleep with them, take them to the library with us, and use them with their other toys.

Mira quickly found that she could apply them to her skirt as a trendy fashion accessory.

Stella, not to be outdone, found an alternative purpose for her animal friends.

Lyra, in an act of defiance when informed that they wouldn’t be able to sleep with the little pieces at night, took matters into her own hands and “napped” with them straight away.

All silliness aside, this resource is an awesome educational tool and thereforeI’m adding it to my list of “Must-Have” resources.  I’ve been able to incorporate it into our math activities already this week for Stella.  I was even able to add a level of complexity to it by having Mira use it to show me the different ways she can make a number: for example instead of 8 single animals she’ll do 4+4 or 2+2+2+2 or 6+2.  Number bonds and multiplication games are just a few of the ways you can expand on this resource.  I’m so glad I splurged and added it to my list of purchases.

As much as I love this resource I don’t know if I would have spent the full price of $40 dollars for it; but at the sale price it was impossible to beat.  Don’t worry though, if you missed the sale you have the option to pick it up at the “still-very-reasonable” price of $21.99 here from Educational Insights.
